The old Roman fishing port of Águilas was refounded in the Age of Enlightenment, when it began operating in 1785 as a port for loading fruit and vegetables from Murcia. In the 19th century, the place became an important mining port. The Hornillo loading dock, where iron, lead and silver from the surrounding mines were loaded, still survives from this period.
In the old town of Águilas, with its distinct fishing flair, the beautiful ficus gardens of the Plaza de España are worth a visit, as are the town hall (19th century) and the parish church of San José, where the image of the town’s patron saint is kept. Above the old town, on a hill, stands the fortress of San Juan de Águilas, built in 1579 for defensive purposes. At its feet is the port and its characteristic black and white striped lighthouse, which has been in operation since the mid-19th century. The food market and the railway monument are other points of interest.
This fishing village offers its inhabitants, a 34 km long coastline. This, together with the enviable average temperature, makes it one of the most important tourist destinations in the Region of Murcia. Here you can find secluded coves and beaches with clear waters, such as La Higuerica, La Carolina or Calabardina; as well as urban beaches like Las Delicias. And thanks to the excellent rocky seabed, this area – especially the island of Isla del Fraile and the area around Cape Cabo Cope – is one of the most suitable parts of the Mediterranean coast for diving.
